AR technology to improve service process efficiency

In the past few years, Empower has developed new digital products and services on the basis of its strong industry expertise. In 2018, the development of digital solutions took giant leaps forward. A good example of this is the inclusion of an AR remote collaboration application called Pointr in Empower’s service portfolio. Our partner in the adoption of AR technology has been Delta Cygni Labs, the Tampere-based company that developed the Pointr application.

The potential of augmented reality (AR) in Empower’s construction and maintenance business operations was already recognized a few years ago. On the basis of this, Empower started to explore the topic mainly from the perspective of its own service production development and a couple of years ago, the first internal pilot projects using Pointr by Delta Cygni Labs were carried out. As a result of the renewed strategy, and the promising results of the pilot projects, the decision was made to intensify cooperation with Delta Cygni Labs so that Empower would be able to offer the Pointr application to its own customers, too.

Applications for Pointr can be found in Empower’s own processes in improving the efficiency of repairs, field inspections and design work, for instance.

Pointr is the perfect match for Empower’s AR needs. Pointr is a communications tool that uses augmented reality and is mainly based on video streaming. It is optimized for technical troubleshooting when parties are in different locations. Applications for the tool can be found in Empower’s own processes, too, in improving the efficiency of repairs, field inspections and design work, for instance. Under the EmPoint service concept, our customers can visit their sites or infrastructure installations remotely with the aid of Pointr and Empower’s field personnel. The principal benefits of this technology are reduced need to travel, better utilization of working hours and faster troubleshooting.

– The Pointr pilot projects and Pointr cooperation have made it clear that there is a lot of potential in AR technology and many suitable applications can be found for it. My view is that Pointr is well suited to Empower’s digital service portfolio. It will be interesting to see how cooperation evolves, says Joonas Koivuniemi, Head of New Business Development at Empower’s Connectivity division.
